20 Minutes with Alasdair Stuart

March 30, 2012 Posted by Dave Robison

Alasdair Stuart

Alasdair Stuart

Alasdair Stuart quietly sits down to the roundtable and – with wit and laughter – makes it all okay.  While his talents are diverse and potent – including narration, writing and blogging, editing, and game design – it is his ability express the essence of whatever topic is on the table with honesty and warmth that is his distinguishing super-power.  During this (more-than-20-minute) episode, Alasdair shares insights into what makes a story memorable, how to extract and express a theme, reveals the “true” essence of the Isle of Man, and single-handedly ends the Genre Wars. (and, whatever you do, do NOT miss Alasdairs’s Workshop Episode)

Workshop Episode: Workshop Episode 5

Website/Blog: www.alasdairstuart.com

I grew up on the Isle of Man, a small rock in the middle of the Irish Sea whose main exports are fish, scrap iron and generations of children desperate to escape, and yet, strangely drawn back a few years later.

I haven’t been yet, but there’s still time I suspect.

In the meantime I work for magazines like Neo, How It Works and Comic Heroes as a writer and reviewer, something which enables my geeky little former comic store manager’s heart no end. I also write gaming material, most notably for the Doctor Who roleplaying game where the full length adventure in the main rulebook, ‘Arrowdown’ appeared. I’m doing more of that shortly too.

I also blog for SFX.co.uk, edit Hub magazine and am in the process of working on losing a lot of weight. I’m two weeks into training in Muay Thai kickboxing and so far I’m not Batman but, give me a couple of months and Gotham will be safe…

Surrender

March 18, 2012 Posted by Dave Robison

“There are people who appear to be able to invoke creativity on command.  They sit down and BAM, creative inspirations suddenly leap from their lips like spawning salmon.  Want to know their secret?”

image by Kyle SteedI’m a big advocate of creativity, and spend a lot of time both exploring the process and ways of cultivating more of it.  Part of the reason the Roundtable Podcast excites me is the opportunity to take what is usually an “in-your-own-head” experience and pull it into the light with a group of like-minded people.

Between my experiences on the podcast and the articles, posts, and books I’ve read on the subject, I’ve discovered that there is an inherent disconnect in our notions of creativity and the processes that foster it. (more…)

Premature episode release

March 11, 2012 Posted by Dave Robison

Our apologies to everyone who received a notice that Workshop Episode 2 was up and available.

We’re still working out the whole “production-scheduling-release” thing so we can offer reliable and consistent (and awesome) content to our subscribers and apparently we have a little more tinkering to do in that department.  The episode will be available as scheduled at 12:01am (CST) on Tuesday, March 13th.

Sorry for the tease and for those of you early birds who managed to catch the episode before we so cruelly ripped it from the podosphere… drop us a line and we’ll find a way to make it up to you.
