The NaNoWriMo Project (1 of 4)

NaNoWriMo Coat of Arms
NaNoWriMo Coat of Arms

Each year, thousands of bold and dedicated writers accept the NaNoWriMo challenge: get 50,000 words on paper in a month. This challenge has been a catalyzing moment for many writers where they discover that productive word counts are achievable. With that discovery, the ultimate goal of publication is one step closer to reality.

At The Roundtable Podcast, we support this worthy ambition wholeheartedly, and we wanted to help… so we invited four remarkable writers to gather at the table and share their own preparations for the NaNoWriMo event.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be the Roundtable without some brainstorming, so everyone dives in and helps workshop each other’s stories. This is writerly goodness, literary gold, and a NaNoWriMo preparation all rolled into one!

Great idea to gear people up for Nano. I have a couple of questions for Christopher to consider before starting.

First is a craft question: Do you plan on this story being told first person or third person? And if it is first person, are you planning on the protagonist being an unreliable narrator?

Second is a setting question: How is the golem girl able to “live” within the non-magical wards?

Peter,

After thinking about that very question, and considering first person from Glory’s POV, and first person from Praga’s (the golem girl) POV, I think I’ve settled with limited third person from mostly Glory’s POV, with occasional jaunts around the institution. That may change, of course, in the writing.

Your second question is actually a question I want Glory asking in the early parts of the story. Basically, she’s not magic any more. She was constructed by magic, and now is huge with super strength, but it was a one time thing. She was constructed, and now lives and exists. There is no magic keeping her going. There was just magic that brought her to life.
