20 Minutes with Mercedes Yardley

November 18, 2014 Posted by Dave Robison

Mercedes Yardley

Mercedes Yardley

Mercedes Yardley‘s literary voice is singular, beautiful, and striking in its poignant honesty. If you read anything from her marvelous canon – including “Apocalyptic Montessa and Nuclear Lulu: A Tale of Atomic Love“, “Nameless: The Darkness Comes” or the newly released “Pretty Little Dead Girls” – you will discover tales that defy category (she calls them “whimsical horror”) and will be a splash of wonder that will wake up and delight you.

Joined by author Paul Ellis, we dive into an astonishing 20(ish) minutes of writerly discourse, exploring the nature of believability in genre fiction, celebrating the small victories, the relationship between writer and reader and more. There were several “ah-ha” moments for us in this one, and I’ll bet you’re gonna find some, too. Click “PLAY” and find out. ;) (and after you hear this, you’re gonna be as pumped as we are for Mercedes’s Workshop episode airing November 25th).

20 Minutes with Karen Healey

Karen Healey

Karen Healey

Author, educator, and articulate advocate of comics (and so much more), Karen Healey brings an astonishing voice and perspective to the writer’s craft. Her passion for storytelling is deeply rooted in the connections it forges between people, cultures, and histories. Her work has been lauded many times, including the 2011 Sir Julius Vogel Award for Best New Talent and includes “Guardian of the Dead“, “The Shattering“, “When We Wake“, and its sequel “While We Run“. In addition to her delicious prose and richly-drawn characters, Karen brings a fierce integrity and commitment to the truth that underlies each of her stories.

Joined by the delightful and inspired Katie Bryski (soon-to-be Stonecoast Master of Fine Arts graduate) as my co-host, we engage in a fabulous 20(ish) minutes of writerly discourse with Karen, exploring the merits of fan fiction, embracing diversity, integrating mythology into stories, and more (and be sure to check out Karen’s Workshop Episode for even more writerly goodness).

20 Minutes with Janet and Chris Morris

Janet and Chris Morris

Janet and Chris Morris

When you sit down to talk with Janet Morris and Chris Morris, be prepared for a conversation unlike any you’ve had before. The scope and breadth of their experience spans fiction and non-fiction, government policy, music, history, horse breeding, and more. They are storytellers who breathe eloquent passion and authenticity into their tales, illuminating the shadowed corners of mythic grandeur through their craft.

Their fiction work includes The Sacred Band of Stepsons series, “I, the Sun“, and editing and contributing to the Heroes in Hell series (which includes tales from the luminaries of genre fiction), and so much more (even their Wikipedia pages include a “select fiction biography”). With such a vast tapestry of tales woven between them, you know this is going to be a conversation fraught with writerly delights.

With Michael R. Underwood (author of “The Younger Gods“, “Shield and Crocus“, “Geekomancy” and more, co-host at the fabulous Skiffy and Fanty Podcast, and Guest Host on the RTP) as my co-host, we engage in (way more than) 20 minutes of astonishing discourse, exploring the symmetry between music and story, the resonance of the craft of fiction and non-fiction writing, and how to “ascend from the pit of self-doubt into the light of self-knowledge and mastery”. Yeah… you don’t want to miss this one, gang. (and you know Janet and Chris’s Workshop Episode is an epic event!).

Bradley Beaulieu

Bradley Beaulieu

This week, I’m delighted to have Bradley Beaulieu (BOW-lee-er)(no, really) take the Big Chair at the Roundtable for 20-ish minutes of some stellar writerly discourse.

Brad is an author of sweeping epic fantasy, tales of rich authentic and intriguing characters told in lushly rendered story worlds. His works include: The Winds of Khalakovo, The Straits of Galahesh, The Flames of Shadam Khoreh,  as well as “Strata“, a collaborative scifi tale with Stephen Gaskell. His stories have appeared in Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, The Crimson Pact, and more. AND he’s the co-host (with Greg Wilson) of SPECULATE, one of the podosphere’s premiere podcasts on the writing craft.

Moses Siregar is my co-host for this splendid discussion with Brad as we explore the process of collaboration, Brad’s worldbuilding mojo, dynamic vs iconic characters and more. Hit that PLAY button, sit back, and let the awesomeness flow into your brain  (and we leverage all that extensive experience and savvy in Brad’s Workshop Episode!).

20 Minutes with David Annandale

September 23, 2014 Posted by Dave Robison

David Annandale

David Annandale

If all real art is confrontation, then war is the only possible sublimity.” — Kathe Koja, Bad Brains

This week, we darken the room and run some old Gozilla movies in the background as we welcome author and professor of film and fiction David Annandale to the Big Chair at the Roundtable. In his own words…

By night, David Annandale brings doom to untold billions as a writer of Warhammer 40,000 fiction for the Black Library, most recently in the novels The Death of Antagonis, Yarrick: Imperial Creed, The Damnation of Pythos and Maledictus. As the author of the horror novel Gethsemane Hall, he hopes to end sleep for you forever. And in his Jen Blaylock thrillers (Crown Fire, Kornukopia, and The Valedictorians), he does his best to blow up everything in sight. During the day, he poisons minds as he teaches film, video games and English literature at the University of Manitoba. If you have any fragments of hope still left, you can have them crushed at his website or by following his Twitter account.

Do you see why we wanted him on the RTP?

The conversation is made even more delightful by my remarkable co-host, Jennifer Melzer (author of The Serpent of Time novels Edgelanders and the newly released Sorrow’s Peak and much more as well as being a mercenary editor extraordinaire). Together the three of us wander the literary landscape, discussing the nature of horror, the art of collaboration, the essential nature of time management, and more. Writerly goodness and intriguement are but a mouseclick away… (and you can bet there are threads of story woven in to a tapestry of literary splendor at David’s Workshop Episode!).

20 Minutes with Tim Marquitz

Tim Marquitz

Tim Marquitz

This week we are delighted to welcome Tim Marquitz – Editor in Chief and Co-Publisher at Ragnarok Publications as well as author of grim and fantastical tales –  to the Big Chair at the Roundtable. Tim’s experience runs the gambit from crafting novels (like the Demon Squad Series, The Blood War Trilogy and more) and short fiction (appearing in anthologies like “Neverland’s Library” along side Mark Lawrence, Jeff Salyards, and Tad Williams) to editing superb anthologies (like “Kaiju Rising: Age of Monsters” and “Fading Light“) to co-authoring the Dead West series with Joe Martin and Kenny Soward.

With Moses Siregar (author of “The Black God’s War“) joining me on the mic, we indulge in 20(ish) minutes of writerly inquiry with Tim, exploring the key aspects of urban fantasy, where the line is draw between editor and story, and the qualities that define a “great story” for Tim. A veritable feast of writerly victuals awaits at the Roundtable Buffet! (and just when you thought it couldn’t get better… tune in to Tim’s Workshop Episode!).

Ragnarok Publications Kickstarter for the amazing “Blackguards” anthology runs through September 24th. Help back this bad boy and get some AMAZING stuff!

20 Minutes with Delilah S. Dawson

Delilah S. Dawson

Delilah S. Dawson

To have Delilah S. Dawson join us at the virtual Table is the podcast equivalent of plummeting down a water slide riding an alpaca (without the bleating and flailing of hooves). Author of deliciously wicked tales for adults (including the Blud Series, featuring Wicked as They Come, Wicked as She Wants, and Wicked After Midnight) and honest no-punches-pulled tales for teens (like Servants of the Storm), Delilah is blazing her own path through the literary world. With Guest Co-Host Starla Huchton at my side, we foray into a remarkable 20(ish) minutes discussing the power of music as a writing tool, insights into the art of worldbuilding, and how to craft a good sex scene. Hitch up your knickers, kids… this is quite a ride! (and the writerly mojo falls like rain in Delilah’s Workshop Episode!).

20 Minutes with Kameron Hurley

Kameron Hurley

Kameron Hurley

Kameron Hurely is a singular voice in the speculative fiction continuum. Not only is she the author of the Bel Dame Apocrypha (comprised of “God’s War“, “Infidel“, and “Rapture“) and the upcoming “Mirror Empire” (hitting shelves August 26), she is also a prodigious blogger, infusing the world with her startling and articulate insights. Brion and I were delighted to have this decorated veteran from the spec fic trenches take the Big Chair at the Table and we spend 20(ish) minutes discussing Wonder Woman on a kangaroo, the responsibility of writers to “own” their words, the idea of making authentic fantasy, and so much more. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll walk away with an armload of writerly goodness (and stay tuned for the fabulousity of Kameron’s Workshop episode).

20 Minutes with Cat Rambo

Cat Rambo

Cat Rambo

Cat Rambo is the whole marvelous multi-hued package… author of over 200 published tales, World Fantasy Award winner for her editorial work at Fantasy Magazine (yeah… THE Fantasy Magazine), educator and mentor in the literary art, tech geek, nerd, RPG aficionado… oh yeah, and the VP of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (Bam). I can’t think of a better way to officially launch the newly reawakened RTP than with this remarkable individual.

Unless it would be to have Moses Siregar (author of “Black God’s War” and frequent contributor to the awesome Adventures in SciFi Publishing podcast, and the equally fabulous Hide and Create podcast) as my guest co-host and wingman. Now THAT would be frickin’ awesome!

Oh… wait…

Yeah we’re kickin’ it off in fine style as Cat, Moses, and I talk about collaborating with yourself, the joys and perils of worldbuilding, the impact of self-publishing on the established authors world, and more (and definitely check out Cat’s Workshop Episode)

20 Minutes with Joe McKinney

Joe McKinney

Joe McKinney knows zombies. His Dead World series (including “Flesh Eaters” which won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel of 2011) has established Joe as one of the kings of Undead Fiction. But that’s not the end of his literary exploits… he’s written post-apocalyptic scifi, crime thrillers (he IS a police officer in San Antonio after all), and edited numerous works as well. Joe’s the whole package and Brion and I have a blast spending 20-ish minutes discussing the nature of horror literature, the keys to writing a chilling tale, zombie pride, and so much more. (and we rocked some serious brainstorming during Joe’s Workshop Episode too!)
