First Anniversary Episode, Part II (Guest Hosts: J. Daniel Sawyer and John Mierau)

March 19, 2013 Posted by Dave Robison

The Roundtable Podcast, First Anniversary Episode pt II, with J. Daniel Sawyer, John Mierau, and Dave RobisonWe conclude our anniversary celebration with a remarkable workshop worthy of the first year of our quest for Literary Gold.

We have our returning Guest Host, J. Daniel Sawyer – author of sweeping sci-fi thrillers, rich and complex mysteries, comprehensive guides and resources for writers, and so many more artistic and literary explorations – lending his substantial vision and experience to the workshop. Add to that the articulate and insightful John Mierau, another veteran Guest Host of the Roundtable and crafter of exquisite tales with casts of nuanced and complex characters. With these two creative trailblazers as our guides we launch into a workshop… of my story!

My tale of a young woman’s shame in denying her child an honorable death in a culture that reveres their sacrificed innocents spawns a remarkable discussion, affirming once again our decision to bring seasoned and experienced authors to the table. Dan, John, and Brion all helped reveal layers of both the story AND my approach to it that gave a new appreciation of my own process and the depth of the story I had undertaken. In short, it was a smorgasbord of Literary Gold. (and you can load your plate with more fabulous insights at Dan’s Showcase Episode AND you can check out John’s Past Showcase and Workshop Episodes as well)

20 (more) Minutes with J. Daniel Sawyer

Dan Sawyer – consummate storyteller, media producer, and creative visionary – was our first Guest Host. One year ago, nervous and uncertain, Brion and I interviewed Dan and launched a podcast, starting a journey that has led to so many discoveries, friendships, and opportunities to explore the creative process. Dan is the ideal catalyst for such a journey, given his diverse and extensive experience in the art of expression. During this celebratory 20(ish) minutes of conversation, we delve a bit deeper into Dan’s writing process, discuss the pros and cons of genre-jumping, uncover some strategies to keep your audience guessing, and more.  (and the quest for Literary Gold continues during Dan’s Workshop Episode!)

A Special RTP Update: Guest Hosts and Writers, Accomplishments and News!

May 30, 2012 Posted by Brion Humphrey

Throughout the course of this podcast, Dave and I have been like a couple of escaped mental patients, stalking host after glorious host, strapping them down and forcing them to participate in an experiment that neither one of us believed would be as monumental, thrilling, or just plain fun as this ride has been.

Add to that our guest writers, who came aboard (often tentatively and for good reason) with the skeleton of a story draped across their outstretched arms, hoping, believing, and trusting us to conjure flesh to bone, blood to muscle, and breathe to life what would inevitably lead us all to that one thing we strive to achieve every week on our show: Literary Gold!

But what happens after the microphones are unplugged and our guests, hosts and writers alike, fall into the dead air silence at the end of the episode?  Where do they go?  What do they do?  What awesomeness prevails beyond the Roundtable Podcast in the darkened writers’ studios and closet offices?

Well, now that I’ve mixed about every metaphor known to man, let’s find out.  It truly is an honor to have the time that we’ve had with the amazing people that have agreed to give up several hours of their busy lives to chew the fat with Dave and I, so here’s a quick update on some of the great people we’ve shared the mic with and a sampling of the awesomeness they’re radiating.

Workshop Episode 1 with J. Daniel Sawyer and Benjamin ClaybornIn our premiere episode we invite J. Daniel Sawyer to help us work through an epic fantasy story presented by up-and-coming author Benjamin Clayborne.  Among the talking points are the nature of insanity, the importance of social/economic/political foundations, and finding your voice in the writing process.  We couldn’t be more pleased with this first “Workshop Episode.” (And don’t miss Dan’s Showcase Episode)

I know… “Zero-Point-Five”?

But SO much has happened since we started this project and Brion and I wanted to update everyone on our progress and some of the cool things we’ve discovered, both about the podcast and ourselves.

Irrational Fears

February 11, 2012 Posted by Dave Robison

Fear is the great un-balancer.  It distorts and narrows our awareness until we can only see what’s directly in front of us, whether it’s the blank page, or that query letter to an editor, or the send button on an email to someone who doesn’t know you.

When Brion and I made the commitment to launch this podcast, the first step was to make a list of authors to have on the show as Guest Hosts.  We set our sights high… we wanted great discussions with credible and creative individuals. We built our wish list of dream hosts and, looking at it, I remember thinking, “Oh yeah… I’d listen to that podcast.”

First on the list was J. Daniel Sawyer.  I knew his site and clicked the “Contact” link… and froze.  I had drafted a brief introduction – very formal without being stiff – hoping it conveyed that we were more than just a couple schmucks on a lark.  I pasted it into the contact page… and my pulse started pounding in my ears.  I was scared… terrified, to be honest. Website/Blog: http://www.jdsawyer.net

J. Daniel Sawyer is a hat-wearing, obsessive-compulsive nutcase attempting to write his way out of the loony bin. He’s the author of numerous fiction podcasts including Sculpting God, Down From Ten, and The Antithesis Progression (which earned him a spot as a 2009 Parsec Finalist). Lacking in personal qualities things that make for respectable character (such as the ability to sit still and shut up), he’s forced to channel his lack of decorum into the fields of photography, a/v production, and writing for outfits like LinuxJournal and the occasional speculative fiction anthology.

When not working on his new secret steampunk fantasy adventure or getting into other mischief, he can be heard hosting the skeptical salon The Polyschizmatic Reprobates Hour, and as the narrator of Free Will, book two of The Antithesis Progression, both available through http://www.jdsawyer.net.
