Workshop Episode 33 (Guest Host: Nathan Lowell)

October 16, 2012 Posted by Dave Robison

The Roundtable Podcast, Workshop Episode 33, with Nathan Lowell and Michael Brudenell Nathan Lowell – author, podcaster, scholar, and Asker of Interesting Questions – returns to the Big Chair at the Roundtable to help Brion and I workshop a tale offered up by Guest Writer Michael Brudenell. Mike brings a very cool contemporary martial arts story to the table fraught with ancient societies, secret government projects, with the future of humanity in the balance. This is, of course, a veritable buffet of awesomeness and we all fill our plates high with ideas, suggestions, and “what if’s”. Literary gold ensues… get some for yourself by clicking that PLAY button! (and when you’re done, give a listen to Nathan’s Showcase Episode!)

20 (more) Minutes with Nathan Lowell

Nathan Lowell

Nathan Lowell

Nathan Lowell was the first Guest Host to ask us if he could be on the show. He’s also the first Guest Host to write us and ask “When are we doing it again?”. I’m not sure what that says about us, but it speaks volumes of Nathan. He has distinguished himself in many ways – as an author, podcaster, educator, and business man – but he’s also an adventurer, a seeker, and an artist who deeply enjoys exploring his craft. This second 20(ish) minutes with him leads down the road of discovering authorial voice, the editing process, and an exploration of what makes a “strong story”. There is a surfeit of writerly goodness for everyone here, so dive in an get yours! (and do check out Nathan’s Workshop Episode!)

The Roundtable Goes to Balticon (pt 1 of 2)

Balticon 46

This year I had the privilege and pleasure of attending Balticon 46. I’ve been to game and fantasy conventions before, but never Balticon, and I had heard it was THE con to attend for podcasters and new media creators and fans alike.

Wow.  Yeah.  It was amazing… fabulous panel discussions, great events, remarkable guests… and you couldn’t swing a dead cat without hitting an author, editor, publisher, or podcaster (I tried and, for the record, it wasn’t a real cat and I apologize to John Mierau for any injuries sustained during the experiment).  I learned so much and had the pleasure of finally meeting people who had existed only as voices in my iPad.  Just amazing.

Brion was unable to make the scene (with some excuse about continuing the education of our nation’s youth or something) but I had to share the awesomeness with him.  So I walked around the convention asking these remarkable creators one question: (more…)

A Special RTP Update: Guest Hosts and Writers, Accomplishments and News!

May 30, 2012 Posted by Brion Humphrey

Throughout the course of this podcast, Dave and I have been like a couple of escaped mental patients, stalking host after glorious host, strapping them down and forcing them to participate in an experiment that neither one of us believed would be as monumental, thrilling, or just plain fun as this ride has been.

Add to that our guest writers, who came aboard (often tentatively and for good reason) with the skeleton of a story draped across their outstretched arms, hoping, believing, and trusting us to conjure flesh to bone, blood to muscle, and breathe to life what would inevitably lead us all to that one thing we strive to achieve every week on our show: Literary Gold!

But what happens after the microphones are unplugged and our guests, hosts and writers alike, fall into the dead air silence at the end of the episode?  Where do they go?  What do they do?  What awesomeness prevails beyond the Roundtable Podcast in the darkened writers’ studios and closet offices?

Well, now that I’ve mixed about every metaphor known to man, let’s find out.  It truly is an honor to have the time that we’ve had with the amazing people that have agreed to give up several hours of their busy lives to chew the fat with Dave and I, so here’s a quick update on some of the great people we’ve shared the mic with and a sampling of the awesomeness they’re radiating.

Master Procrastination and the Disciplinary Imperative

April 28, 2012 Posted by Brion Humphrey

Writing...writing...research...Tacos!

“If we let too much time to lapse, the thread will snap and getting back to it later will cause the flow of our writing to become stilted and disjointed.”

I’ll get to it later.

I have to spend time with my wife /family /friend /posse /dog /herd of rabid monkeys or they’ll hate me.

I write best at night, so right now I’ll just do research (watch TV).

I’m hungry, let me just eat a sandwich first…or a taco…or a sandwich AND a taco.

I’m currently 63,000 words into my second novel attempt.  Sounds fairly impressive, but I’ve been at 63,000 words for the last six weeks.  Sure, I’ve written two short stories, a couple blog entries, participated in recording ten-or-so Roundtable episodes(my favorite distraction besides my wife), taught, graded papers and lesson-planned for about 60 hours a week, etc., etc., and on, and on.  A lot like you! But is all of that really keeping me from writing my book?  Yes.  Because I let it.

We all are experts at wasting time, and the successful few have learned to at least minimize the bastard! We’ve all heard and read countless papers and pamphlets and programs on how to beat down the maniacal villain known as Master Procrastination.  That is not what this post is going to do.

Instead, it’s important to look at why we need to get our butts in seats and get to work and leave the hot pocket (or two) in the freezer. (more…)
